ACT GREENS BACK CALL FOR $10 BILLION PUBLIC TRANSPORT INVESTMENT

Today's call by a group of public transport experts in Melbourne for the Federal Government to invest $10 billion in public transport is just what's needed to address climate change and rising fuel prices says ACT Greens candidate for the Legislative Assembly seat of Brindabella, Amanda Bresnan.

"The Greens are excited by this call for a substantial investment of funds in public transport by the Federal Government, and we hope that the ACT government will get behind it."

"As we face the future of climate change and high fuel prices, we need to improve the quality of public transport in Canberra to make it a quick and easy option for everyday travel."

"The ACT Greens have been calling for a coordinated easy-to-use public transport system for the ACT, and it is encouraging to see that experts in the field support this policy", said Ms Bresnan.

"The ACT desperately needs an injection of capital for public transport infrastructure to make services more frequent and give us the choice to leave our cars at home and do our part in addressing climate change."

"The ACT government should be looking to build a new generation public transport system for Canberra's centenary in 2013, and thinking about an approach which integrates buses and light rail."

"We need to increase the reliability, frequency, and safety of our public transport services."

Ms Bresnan says that "Families who can't afford the rising costs of fuel need a public transport system that serves their local area and gets them where they need to go quickly and easily."
