Industry

The ACT Greens believe:
1. ACT Government decision-making in relation to industry should be consistent and have a long-term view
2. a systematic public policy approach to industry, based on a strategic plan, is essential
3. business, government and the community sector can best achieve mutually beneficial outcomes by working together
4. business should play a role in turning Canberra into a world-class, sustainable, internationally recognised city
5. business and industrial development in the ACT should meet financial, social and environmental best practice benchmarks.

The ACT Greens want:
1. responsive relationships between business and government based on mutual respect and understanding
2. a long-term strategic plan for industry in the ACT by 2012
3. a highly localised business and trade sector
4. a robust and sustainable goods and services sector in the ACT
5. a comprehensive retail strategy to encourage diversity in the retail market by 2012
6. standardised best practice guidelines measuring social and environmental impact formulated in consultation with industry.

The ACT Greens support:
1. developing a robust plan for industry in the ACT in consultation with the business and community sectors
2. working with business and community representatives to find new and appropriately scaled opportunities for industry in the ACT
3. creating an independent statutory body that includes cross-sectoral representatives and provides the ACT Government with independent advice in relation to industry
4. publicly disclosing information regarding industry assistance by the ACT Government
5. creating a memorandum of understanding with the NSW Government to help build a regional industry plan and create a more consistent regulatory environment
6. involving industry and the business community in comparative research of national capitals conducted by the ACT Planning and Land Authority
7. involving business and industry in the ACT Climate Change Strategy
8. involving local industry in promoting the capital region throughout the rest of Australia
9. establishing a formal and transparent government–business liaison process to ensure the business community is fully informed and can operate functionally with government
10. targeting industry assistance at sustainable industries
11. collaborating with the business community to develop a plan for growing the local arts sector and building Canberra’s creative economy
12. facilitating relationships between child care providers and business to make the ACT a more child care friendly jurisdiction
13. working with the ACT private sector to position Canberra as a prime location for meetings, conferences and other major gatherings
14. using an appropriate local enterprise to incrementally replace ACT Government vehicles with a fully hybrid fleet by 2020
15. developing a framework for coordinating local and nationally significant tourism operations to benefit the ACT tourism industry, and consulting industry in formulating an ACT tourism marketing strategy
16. establishing a long-term plan for the construction industry based on ecological sustainability through high-quality design
17. establishing a public register of local businesses that adhere to standardised environmental and social best practice benchmarks
18. subjecting all major industrial projects to climate change impact assessment
19. developing an advisory office to assist and encourage business and industry to reduce its environmental impact.
