Sport

The ACT Greens believe:
1. sport and physical recreation assist in the maintenance of mental and physical health
2. the staging of sporting events and the building of sporting facilities should minimise ecological impacts
3. sporting excellence should be encouraged and recognised, and opportunities for improvement and competition provided
4. sport and physical recreation are important sources of economic activity and employment.

The ACT Greens want:
1. improvement in public health through increased access to sport and recreational activities
2. inclusive programs to encourage the broadest possible participation in sport and recreational activity
3. maximum community control and management of sporting and recreation facilities
4. a reduced insurance and administration burden on sports organisations
5. increased transparency in sports funding decisions
6. best practise public safety in and around sporting facilities
7. major sporting events to remain in the ACT
8. an end to the association between sport and the advertising of alcohol and tobacco
9. an end to the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sport, and for athletes to be well informed of their dangers.

The ACT Greens support:
1. a needs-based sports funding system
2. adequate funding for ACT Sport, the ACT Academy of Sport, Birrigai and other outdoor education facilities
3. gender equity in sports funding allocations
4. considering pooled administrative support and training for voluntary sporting and recreational organisations
5. working with sporting organisations to address problems in obtaining event insurance
6. providing adequate opportunity for non-competitive and co-operative sport and recreation in the school curriculum
7. introducing junior sporting codes of conduct to promote fairness and non-violent behaviour
8. teaching swimming and water survival skills to all primary school students
9. introducing programs specifically for women, people with a disability and young people at risk, and continuing the promotion of programs specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
10. providing for the interests of older people in sport and physical activity
11. greater media coverage and recognition of women’s sport
12. improving public transport and lighting near sporting facilities
13. access to childcare facilities at sporting and other recreational venues.
