Greater resources needed in Magistrates Court
Friday, August 8th, 2008ACT Greens Lead Candidate for Brindabella, Amanda Bresnan, has called for an increase in resources to go with any increases to the Magistrates Court workload as a result of the Crimes Legislation Amendment Bill 2008.
“The new legislation will bring many more cases under the Magistrates Court, which is already overworked. This should be reflected in an increase in key resources that the Court needs.” Ms Bresnan said today.
“The Magistrates Court desperately requires a full-time mental health team, comprising a psychologist and a mental health nurse.
“The Court also needs a full-time Indigenous support worker and more qualified translators.
Ms Bresnan pointed to a reduction in committal hearings as the only real efficiency gain in the court overhaul.
“The ACT Government has reduced the mutually beneficial committal hearing process to a tick-box exercise.
“It is obvious that the ACT Government is playing a ‘Tough on Crime’ card for the election campaign.” Ms Bresnan said.
“What we need is a preventative approach, assisting those at risk of criminal behaviour to make better choices for the safety of the community.
“Investment in evidence-based corrections programs aimed at minimising and preventing reoffending must be given a high priority. Preventing someone from entering into al life of crime will have much greater long-term impacts on crime rates than increasing the number of people who go to jail.” Ms Bresnan Said
