Election sends Greens message to ACT Government

ACT Greens MLA Dr Deb Foskey today said that the strong result for the Greens in the federal election sends a strong message to the Territory Labor government.

“The Greens polled third highest across the country and there was a significant increase in Green votes in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.”

“In the ACT the Greens received almost 13% of the House of Representatives vote. In the Senate Kerrie Tucker received almost 22% - the highest Greens Senate vote in the country. Clearly the people of Canberra see the Greens as the best party to keep the Government accountable - whether Labor or the Coalition - and to achieve better environmental and social outcomes.”

“This election sends a strong message that the community wants more action on the environment and climate change and that the ‘business as usual’ approach is not good enough.”

“People in Canberra saw that there were 2 elections, one for the Government in the House of Representatives and the other to ensure the Senate could do its job of watching the Government.”

“The ACT with a majority government is not unlike the Federal Government prior to the election. I predict that Canberrans will seek more accountability from a strong crossbench in Oct 08.”

“More and more Canberrans are seeing that in a unicameral parliament like ours, a strong crossbench performs a similar role to the Senate on the hill. That’s why I expect a strong Greens vote next year,” said Dr Foskey
