Chapter 1 Principles and Objectives

1. Name and Constitution

1.1The name of the Party is “The ACT Greens”.

1.2The Party operates as a member body of “The Greens”, the national confederation of state green parties (referred to in this Constitution as “the Australian Greens” to avoid confusion with the ACT Greens).

1.3This Constitution identifies the principles and rules governing the conduct of the Party’s affairs and defines the powers and roles of its constituent bodies and office-bearers.

1.4.All other Party documents are subordinate to this Constitution with the exception of the Charter of the Australian Greens and the national constitution of the Australian Greens.

2.The Charter Of The Australian Greens

2.1The basic principles and aims of the Party are defined in the Charter of The Australian Greens.

3.Objectives

The objectives of the Party shall be the following:

3.1To further a vision of the world characterised by ecological sustainability, peace, social justice and grassroots participatory democracy.

3.2To make, publicise and strive to implement policies on local, national and global issues based on the Charter of The Greens.

3.3To seek the election or appointment to public office of people who are committed to the Greens’ Charter, principles, policies and objectives.

3.4To be a registered political Party pursuant to the Commonwealth and ACT Electoral Acts.

3.5To encourage other political parties to adopt our objectives by electoral strategies and direction of voting preferences.

3.6To support and assist members of the Federal Parliament and the ACT Legislative Assembly who are members of The Greens or who agree with the Charter of The Australian Greens.

3.7To promote the development of, and to cooperate with, the national Green political movement.

3.8To promote and assist other individuals, organisations and community networks in working for the objectives of the Greens.

3.9To engage in education of both ourselves and the wider community to raise awareness of the issues and concerns covered by the Charter and policies of the Greens.

3.10To provide mutual support for members to fulfil their own potentials.

3.11To resist oppressive and destructive institutions and practices using nonviolent means.

4.Powers

4.1The ACT Greens may do all things permitted by law and by this Constitution which may be necessary or desirable to pursue the objectives of the Party.
